The GoldBod Regime Explained: Act 1140 (2025)

A plain-language guide to Ghana's Gold Board Act, 2025 (Act 1140): what changed, who GoldBod is, why old PMMC licences are void, why foreigners were barred from local trading from May 2025, and what eligibility looks like now. How a legitimate facilitator operates within the regime — not as it.

In 2025, Ghana rebuilt the legal foundation of its entire gold-trading sector in a single Act. If you are an institutional buyer sourcing West African gold, the Ghana Gold Board Act, 2025 (Act 1140) is the law that decides who may legally sell it to you — and understanding it is the first defence against the fraud that saturates the market. Kronix Metals operates within this regime as a compliant facilitator, and connects verified supply to institutional buyers internationally, since 1992. Discuss a supply partnership: +233 27 000 0844. What GoldBod Is

The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) is the statutory body created by Act 1140 to govern gold trading from Ghana’s artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) sector. Under the Act, GoldBod is the sole legal buyer, seller, assayer, weigher, valuer and exporter of ASM-sector gold. It does not mine — that is the Minerals Commission’s domain under the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703) — and it is distinct from the Bank of Ghana (reserves) and the GRA (tax and customs).

GoldBod licenses the ecosystem that feeds it: aggregators, buyers, assayers, refiners, exporters, storage, transport and transit. A legitimate facilitator like Kronix Metals operates within that licensing regime; it does not claim to be GoldBod, and it is neither a miner nor a refinery.

What Act 1140 Changed

It Repealed PMMC

Act 1140 repealed the old PMMC Act and transferred PMMC’s functions — including its National-Assayer role — to GoldBod. References to “PMMC” in older guidance now map to GoldBod.

It Made Old Trading Licences Void

All trading licences previously issued by PMMC or the Minister ceased to be valid (large-scale mining licences excepted). New GoldBod licence applications opened in 2025.

It Barred Foreigners from Local Trading

From 1 May 2025, foreigners may no longer buy or deal in gold inside Ghana’s local market. They may only apply to off-take gold directly from GoldBod. Dealing in gold locally without a GoldBod licence is now an offence.

It Set Eligibility

Eligibility to hold a local trading licence is restricted to Ghanaians aged 18+ or wholly Ghanaian-owned companies.

The Regulator Map — Get It Right

| Body | Scope | The brand’s relationship | |---|---|---| | GoldBod (Act 1140) | Gold trading / assay / export of ASM gold | Operates within it — never claims to be it | | Minerals Commission (Act 703) | Mining licensing | Not the brand’s regulator — we do not mine | | Bank of Ghana | Reserves / forex | Macro context only | | GRA | Tax (5% royalty) / customs | Part of our export-compliance work |

Why This Matters to a Buyer

Act 1140 turned the legitimacy question into a legal one. The advance-fee scammers who once hid behind vague “Ghana gold” offers are now also legally exposed: there is no legal local gold trade outside the GoldBod regime. So the single most powerful question a buyer can ask is whether a partner operates within that regime — and can document it. A partner who claims to be GoldBod, to hold a mining licence while selling traded gold, or to sell “below spot” is signalling exactly what to walk away from.

Markets We Genuinely Serve

Kronix Metals facilitates trade between West African supply and institutional buyers in the United Kingdom and major European markets, across Africa, and through the Ghana–Togo (Lomé) corridor and Francophone West Africa — in English and French. We describe only the markets we genuinely serve; we are an institutional B2B partner, not a retail seller.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is GoldBod a licence I can buy, or a regulator?

GoldBod is the statutory regulator and sole legal trader/assayer/exporter of ASM-sector gold under Act 1140. A private firm does not “become” GoldBod; it operates within the regime, potentially as a licensed aggregator, buyer or export partner. Kronix Metals references the GoldBod regime as its legitimacy anchor and does not claim to be GoldBod, to mine, or to be a refinery.

Can a foreign company still buy Ghana gold?

Foreigners were barred from local gold trading from 1 May 2025 and may only off-take directly from GoldBod. International buyers therefore work through compliant, documented channels and licensed partners — which is exactly what a facilitator like Kronix Metals provides, valued against international spot, never below.

Does Act 1140 make Ghana gold LBMA-accredited?

No. Act 1140 governs trading, assay and export — it confers no LBMA accreditation. No Ghana refinery is on the LBMA Gold Good Delivery List; the only Good-Delivery gold refiner in sub-Saharan Africa is Rand Refinery (South Africa). We make no LBMA claim.
